The Battle For Winter

Roaring into town like a frigid southerly front passing over, we present a battle of stratospheric proportions, pitting polar regions against each other to determine the best winter beer this year. In the red corner, representing the Northern Hemisphere and fresh off a huge winter we present North Pole - a mighty Baltic Porter that packs a punch and will warm you from within. In the blue corner, and roaring in from down south is the South Pole - an unapologetic Robust Porter that just oozes class.

A battle that pits two misunderstood sub-styles of a largely misrepresented bolder style against each other, the side-by-side tap fight is promoted by Van Dieman Brewing a judged by the consuming public. An exercise in the progression of our Estate brewing methodology, into which the beers use exclusively our own farm-grown and house-malted malts - including for the first time our own specialty malts.

12 months worth of development, refinement and accumulation has allowed us to pit these two beers against each other, with the only difference between the two being the yeast strain pitched, and the subsequent ferment temperature for that yeast.

Available as a keg release only this winter, through local Tasmanian venues (maybe some might make it north to the big island…), it’s an exciting project that further progresses our estate brewing capabilities. Enjoy!
